Through this website you will find out many of the answers to your questions. Explore this website to learn about what we have found and what action we are planning to take against the negative impacts that are brought upon by the shoe industry.
Why are shoes so important? Well the shoe industry is one of the largest industries in the world. But, it is also one of the largest contributors to the worldwide carbon dioxide emissions.
We conducted a study in school to find out about how much people really know about the shoe industry.
The purpose of this project is to allow us to explore the effects that shoes have on a person's health, environment and economy so we could raise awareness of the harsh conditions that workers of shoe manufacturing face as well as the negative environmental impacts that the production of shoes induce. Shoes are imperative for the function of everyday life as they are used for protection from the environment. By researching the impact of this essential product, we have discovered many interesting and surprising facts that will change the way that we look at shoes as there are many unknown processes that shoes go through to be produced. We have found that shoe manufacturing accounts for 30% percent of the carbon footprint that is produced and that shoes have many negative impacts on the health and well being factory workers due to the large amount of chemicals used in the processes. This is ignored by large corporations due to maximizing profit. Thus, we have come up with survey to test and see how many people are actually aware of the negative impacts of the shoe industry and from those results we studied whether males or females know more about these impacts. From the results collected, it is obvious that people buy shoes very often and that many people have more than 1 pair of shoes. It has also been noted that although students throw out shoes, they do not know what happens after that nor do they know about the manufacturing processes of footwear. Based upon our survey results 73% of students surveyed either somewhat know about the processes of manufacturing or do not know at all. That means that merely 27% know about this topic. We have also found that 43% of the students believe that shoes have an environmental impact after they are thrown out; however, this is untrue as manufacturing footwear takes many chemicals and energy to produce. Ultimately, these results have left us to understand that the negative impacts of the footwear industry are not well known amongst high school students.
